Christoph Matt is an Austrian eco-social designer. He is the founder of Studio Matt, a nomadic design basecamp for environmentally and socially conscious design currently based in Vienna, Austria. Christoph is educated as an economic engineer with focus on information technology, holds a BA Intermedia with focus on sustainability and graphic design from Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences, Austria, in combination with studies at Bilgi University in Istanbul, Turkey. He continued his education and graduated with a MFA Embedded design with a focus on sustainability and design from HDK-Valand, Sweden and exchange at the Iceland University of the Arts in Reykjavik, Iceland. His works were presented in several group and solo exhibitions in Austria, Germany, Sweden and Iceland. Christoph is an active member of the “Design + Posthumanism Network” and the pan-Scandinavian project “The Conference of the Birds” dealing with the extinction of bird species in anthropocentric cities and landscapes in Sweden and Norway, running until 2024. In the course of this project he was a guest lecturer and hosted workshops with KV Konstskola students in Gothenburg, Sweden. In collaboration with the UNESCO biosphere reserve Großes Walsertal Christoph co-curates with Isadora Alves the “Nature Design Camp” and publishes the artist book “Nature Design Guide”, which aims to build new relations between the human and more-than-human in alpine communities. This ongoing project was awarded with the “The University of Gothenburg Sustainability Thesis Award” (GUSTA) 2022. Within the art research program “De Structura”, Estonia and Netherlands, he co-hosted with Catherin Schöberl a critical design and street art workshop with the public in Narva, Estonia. Christoph is a member of the interdisciplinary art collective “The Sympoietic Society” deeply immersed in the “I.C.E * IN CASE OF EMERGENCY” project, an art and science collaboration dealing with the extinction of glaciers and its multispecies in Finland, Italy and Austria.
